Four UCSF personnel were traveling in Nigeria when the May 1 blast occurred. They contacted their department and Risk Management within 45 minutes.
No UCSF personnel were registered for travel in the Philippines during the typhoon November 9, 2013.Any employees planning travel to the stricken area are urged to contact Risk Management for a pre-trip consult.
EGYPT- July 2013
The situation in Egypt has caused the insurance carrier (and the Dept of State) to suspend travel to the area as of July 9 2013. UCEAP cancelled the Fall Program in Cairo in August 2013. UCSF identified some travelers impacted by the restrictions, and is in contact. Risk Management will work directly with anyone who self identifies. Current status available at iJet Trip Planner
No UCSF personnel were involved in the Sept 21, 2013 hostage situation in Nairobi, Kenya. Six registered travelers were in country. All were in contact with our system within 48 hours.
No UCSF personnel were evacuated from the Fukushima area in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.
Can I get UCSF insurance for personal travel?
YES!! Short duration side trips on a company trip are covered (talk to risk management) and now UC has a program where you can get the same insurance for your personal travel
Return to work
I just got back from work abroad. I was told there is a form to submit upon return to work. Where can I find it?
UCSF Occupational Health has guidance, including written guidance, symptom self monitoring, and return to work form which can be seen below.

Does our insurance carrier provide cards in different languages? First helpers may not have English.
No, each time you register travel, print & carry your cards, including emergency contacts. Leave copies with someone HERE as well as carrying several while abroad. A great idea to carry a translated version, the contractor doesn't include that service (YET!)
I read about the students evacuated from Haiti, and it made me wonder how we are tracking students?
All students are required to register their travel. They are in contact with our service, which has evacuated them from Japan and Egypt

Has my travel insurance has been activated?
When it has, you will begin to receive updates on country conditions in the areas in which you travel. You will also be prompted for contact numbers and preferred methods (text, phone, email), and contact numbers for responsible parties in case you cannot be reached. If you have not begun to receive these, contact Risk Management (415) 476-2498
If student called at 3 am, with a fever, and people in the hotel were sick. How do I access help IMMEDIATELY?
There is 24/7 access to medical help, including evacuation, on the insurance cards they printed. If they LOST it, contact Risk Management (415) 476-2498.
My friend from Hopkins was evacuated to Kenya for appendicitis. I think right now UCSF employee purchases their own insurance, how do we know what to do?
