Getting equipment to study site
I need to get equipment to my site, how do I do this? UCSF has a contract with FedEx, and 2 Freight Forwarders, American Cargo Service, and Stevens Global Logistics. FedEx max is 50 lbs, and your department will have the details on using the UCSF account.
How do I pack this so it is compliant?
You can only ship biologicals if you have completed the UCSF bio- shipping training. Dont forget to submit a Material Transfer agreement!
I'm planning on carrying something on the plane rather than paying for freight. Will I have to pay import taxes? The freight forwarder helps you determine if a license is required, whether its a humanitarian gift, or if its a temporary export (< 1 year). If you want to carry it in, its best to clear it with the Office of Compliance, because you will have to generate some paperwork to carry with you.
Great! what is the freight forwarder going to ask for? To generate their automated Export System, the forwarder needs : Name of shipper and consignee, ECCN#, Schedule B, US Value$, Weight, License or exemptions. Date and port of export, carrier, mode of Transit specific requirements. They will then send you an ITN #, you need to keep it for 5 years.
